Even though the application screen is completely static - which thoroughly makes sense the Nokia N9 is built up - some developers created interesting additions which change this fact. AllBoutN9 presents you some live-icons and toggle-icons which spice up the application screen:
The N9's user interface is separated into 3 different windows: What is going on (news feed), what can I do (applications) and what am I using right now (multitask view).

Dynamic Calendar Icon by Pan
At first sight, this add-on doesn't seem to change anything. But you'll see that the calendar icon now shows the right date and isn't static anymore. A very nice addition which you shouldn't miss. Might be coming out the box with P.R 1.2 (next MeeGo update) anyways.

LiveClock by CODeRUS
Replaces the clock icon with a (almost) live clock which gets updated every 5 minutes. It's questionable if this add-on makes sense, since it's not accurate and the actual time is showed anyways on top of the screen. But it looks good and...why not give a try?

GPRS Data Usage by George Ruinelli
This application is rather a widget than just an icon. It shows the current GPRS data usage, where you can choose between home network and roaming network. There's also the option to show how much data you have left in case you have a bandwidth limitation.
A great live icon, which totally lives up it's name. Especially for phone users with a limited data plan, this application is more than just a nice widget.

Toggle icons
ToggleBT by Aka
It has been one of the first of it's kind for the N9. Turns on/off bluetooth with just one click. Well done and works flawless. A must-have if you use bluetooth a lot (file transfer, external devices like Nokia 360 speakers), but want to save battery as much as possible.

TogglePSM by Westley Chong
This new toggle allows you to easily switch on/off N9's inbuilt power saver mode. A very handy tool since it's quiet inconvenient to turn on power saver mode through settings. But TogglePSM opens a confirmation window which stays open like an application as long as you don't close it - that is unnecessary and could be done better - hopefully it will be fixed.

Lock Screen by Westley Chong
Locks your phone immediately after clicking the icon. If using the phone with one hand it can be easier to use this toggle than the physical lock button.

FlightMode by crazyhg
Updated: Features a toggle to switch easily flight mode on/off. Recommended for everyone who travels often by plane or those who just want to turn off any connection in an easy way.
