What is TED?
TED started as a conference in 1984 bringing together people from three different worlds: Technology, Entertainment and Design. With the mission to spread ideas about any possible topic, TED won many listeners around the world. Nowadays two conferences are held per year, one in Long Beach or Palm Springs, USA and another in Edinburgh, Scotland. Over thousand people attend those conferences and can listen 4 days to about 50 speakers who each have a 18-minute talk about topics like science, business, arts or global issues. All with the same aim: Sharing ideas, presenting concepts or solutions, or advert listeners to various issues.
TEDtalks is the attempt to share what happens at the conferences with the world over the internet. Thus, www.ted.com offers more than 1000 videos of their conferences. Even though most speeches are in English, the website offers subtitles in many languages.
