Nokia supports migration of Maemo.org

With Nokia's decision to stop further development on own operation systems, it also cuts down several provided services. Also concerned is the biggest MeeGo and Maemo community known as Maemo.org.

The website informed, that Nokia supports at least the migration of Maemo.org to new servers and to bear accruing costs.

Maemo mobilephone system exists since 2005 and has it's last descendant & derivative with MeeGo Harmattan - also willingly called Maemo 6. The Maemo community has been an important factor in improving Nokia's Maemo and develop applications for it. Furthermore the community has been home for several MeeGo developers and lay foundation for various projects like the well-known Wazapp application.

Extensive economies became necessary through Nokia's radical strategy change initiated by Stephen Elop. Maemo.org is one of the many victims of the company's transformation process and looses its space on Nokia's service servers.

Solutions have to be found and a held conference resulted in getting support by Nokia. Financial help is given to Nemein (Helsinki based company which provides system maintenance) to acquire new servers for The Hildon Foundation, which is a non-profit organization elected by the Maemo Community to handle community oversight and infrastructure.

Nokia's gesture is a nice and welcoming surprise, especially after disappointing the own community several times with past decisions. Maemo community has many Jolla sympathizers and certainly will be relevant for their upcoming Sailfish OS. There is no information available yet how The Hildon Foundation plans to cover future upcoming costs to maintain the community.

"In a conference held by Nokia, Nemein and the Hildon Foundation, Nokia has offered to help economically in the process of migration. The details for starting the migration are under discussion.

Nokia is already working with the Hildon Foundation in a legal document to cover the transferring process of maemo.orgassets. While this document is being reviewed and completed, the migration process of services should take place during the month of December.
Nokia is willing to provide any help in the transference of maemo.org and all of it's assets to the Hildon Foundation. To accomplish that, Nokia will pay the cost of buying the physical servers needed by the Hildon Foundation to ensure the survival of maemo.org after the migration from Logica. Nokia has also offered to pay for the cost of the migration. The Hildon Foundation will be responsible for hosting costs at Nemein beginning in 2013.
The details are being worked out by Nemein and the Hildon Foundation."
