The second day of MWC 2013 arrived and one can't say there has been a storm of big news yet. Nokia published another wave of colorful new Lumia devices and re-branded their location services as HERE. Other brands like Asus also presented some nice, but not outstanding hardware while Mozilla published some more details about their Firefox OS. The release of Jolla's Sailfish OS SDK is certainly the biggest news for MeeGo users and tonight we also get to listen to Marc Dillon's keynote.

At MWC 2013 Sailfish OS was presented by...well a big group of Sailfish OS girls. With highlighter-yellow shirt, they moved around inside and outside the exhibition halls to announce: Mobile world, Sailfish OS will be here!
The unofficial N9 successor wouldn't need that kind of attention though: The just published developer tools show that Jolla mobile system is an elaborated product.
SDK Emulation, not a Nokia N9 upgrade!
Sailfish OS emulation on Ubuntu 12.10 |
The well made SDK (great job Jolla!) allows Linux users (Mac and Windows soon as well) to port and test their applications within the Sailfish OS framework using an emulation software like VirtualBox. The Sailfish OS emulation also gives an insight into what we can expect in the final product - we'll have a closer look at those UI elements soon on our website.
The Sailfish emulation is available to everyone - download instructions can be found on SailfishOS.org.
This doesn't mean though that from today N9 users can install Sailfish on their Nokia device. Understandable this is a request by many N9 users. Something like a Sailfish upgrade will never happen and Jolla simply can't release their platform for a Nokia device.
At various Jolla presentations we could see that Sailfish runs on N950 or N9, but it is up to the community to port Sailfish to existing devices as Jolla confirmed on Twitter today:
"Community can and probably will port Sailfish to various devices, when possible. We will always support that for sure." - Jolla via Twitter

Marc Dillon, Jolla CEO |
You shouldn't expect a Marc Dillon walking up with a Jolla device in his hands - that certainly won't happen. But we will probably learn about why Sailfsh OS is an alternative to other mobile platforms and the idea and philosophy about an independant open-source system.
