Sync music with iTunes (OSX)

NokiaLink is the official way to sync music with a Mac computer. Unfortunately the recent version doesn't work very reliable and often songs or playlists aren't transferred properly.

But there's a way to do this in a better and easier way. What you need is iTunes, a small application and about 10 minutes.

Before you start: We recommend, that you delete any music from your N9 and copy them to your Mac computer (as a backup). Where to find my music? Connect the N9 with USB-cable to the computer and choose "Mass-storage". On your OSX desktop you see now a N9 icon. Open it and you'll find all your songs in a folder called "Music".

1. Download and install iTuneMyWalkman: Download (it's an older application but works well on OSX 10.7 and newer)

2. In iTunes create a new playlist-folder, call it for example Nokia N9 and fill it up with playlists, name them preferable after music genres since the N9 music player doesn't show genres by default.
    • only necessary if you don't want to use your existing iTunes playlists
    • smart playlists are supported too!

3. Close/end iTunes

4. Open iTuneMyWalkman, install Scripts for iTunes and if wanted the automatic phone detection (will show a pop-up window as soon as you connect the N9 with your Mac)

5. Connect your phone and choose the "Mass-storage" option

6. Go to iTuneMyWalkman Preferences

a) Tab "General": Path to audio folder /Volumes/<Your phone>/MUSIC/
(you can also create an individual folder within MUSIC, like "iTunes")

b) Tab "Playlists": Choose the options you want (for now I just chose "Sync Music") and click on
"From selected playlists" where you can choose what playlists should be on your N9

IMPORTANT: Choose "Write playlists in Unicode (UTF- 8 )" and use path separator "/"
--> this way your playlists will be rewritten with "/", else the N9 cannot read them!

 Confirm with "Save"

7. Open iTunes and fill your playlists with songs.
Finally choose Script in your iTunes Menu bar (it looks like a piece of paper, usually between "Help" and "Window"). Through this drop-down menu choose "iTMW Synchronize" and if everything is set up right, your N9 will now sync with iTunes.

8. Disconnect your phone, start its Music Player and let the library refresh itself (can take a couple minutes).
