FBReader: An amazing e-book reader for N9

With FBReader by Geometer Plus and Nokia N9 you don’t need a special e-book reader to access your library of digital books.  Thanks to a great black and white contrast given by the amazing AMOLED display, it’s very enjoyable to read on a N9.

FBReader is fast, highly customizable and has inbuilt access to several online libraries. We tell you what makes this application so good, how to get new reading material and import commercial formats, like Amazon Kindle books.

What FBReader offers

The application supports many different book formats, including ePub, fb2, mobi, chm, html and plain text. PDF documents seem not to be supported, but everyone who already used an e-book reader knows that PDF files aren’t very convenient to use this way.

Using FBReader is a joy, it’s very fast and easy to use - pages can be switched by tapping the right or left side of the screen or by using volume buttons. Since the application is highly customizable it will fit any preferences of readers.  Thus you can choose from many fonts or switch between a so called day&night-mode.

Customization

Pretty much everything can be customized on FBReader. Around 60 fonts are available in any size and style. Each sections like book title, chapter titles, main text etc. are changeable with fonts, line spacing and alignment.

Other options are different colors (font and background), margins, the way progress in reading is shown or how you prefer to scroll. Does that leave any wishes open? I happily say no…

Night mode: Very enjoyable with the deep black of a N9 display

Book sources

FBReader offers many ways to import books:

-Use mass-storage mode to drag&drop books on your N9
-Transfer via Bluetooth
-Integrated network libraries of FBReader

The inbuilt network library access is amazing! The application comes with 9 pre-installed book sources and it’s very easy to find books with the included search function. Of course you can add any of your favorite sources (OPDS catalogues). The con is, that you can’t buy any books or add commercial libraries like Amazon or Thalia. Only an application published by those companies could do that. Still, there is a huge amount of famous books freely available, especially older ones from authors like Jules Vernes or H. G. Wells.

Every book page is nicely adapted to fit the phone screen

With some extra effort it’s possible to use unsupported formats like Amazon’s .azw files. A great application called Calibre (available for Windows, OSX, Linux: Download link) gives the possibility to convert almost any format to for example .epub. Unfortunately many Amazon-books (and others) are DRM protected - those can't be converted to a suitable format.

Proof that Kindle-format can be converted / Pictures in books are shown as well / Quick-Options in FBReader

Don't miss out on FBReader. It's a 5-star application and a must-have for everyone who often or randomly uses the N9 to read.

A must-have application!
