PR1.3 is here

PR1.3 Nokia N9
Yesterday July 3rd, Nokia N9 update PR1.3 started to roll out all over the world and caused a lot of excitement on social media platforms like Facebook and Twitter.
For the sake of completeness we want to contribute an article about what improvements the newest update bring to your phone, where the update is available and how you can download it.

Is PR1.3 already available for my Nokia N9?

Starting in Latin America the updated spread very fast all around the world within one day. However, don't worry if you didn't get an update notification yet - most of N9 users are still on PR1.2.

Why? So far only unlocked phones benefit from the update but many Nokia N9s are tied to a carrier (telecom company). In other words: If you bought your phone at a carrier with a certain contract you probably have a locked phone.

Today (July 4th) PR1.3 is available for following phones (list might not be complete):

How can I get PR1.3?

There are three possibilities to get the newest update (if available for your Nokia N9):
  1. Wait for update OTA (over-the-air) notification: Once the update is ready you get a notification on your phone and can downloaded PR1.3 via Wi-Fi (about 205Mb). Alternatively try: Select Settings > Applications > Manage applications > Updates.
  2. Use Nokia Software updater or Nokia Suite (only available for Windows computers)
  3. Flash your phone with newest firmware (only for experienced users given that it is risky and all applications have to be re-installed)

New features with PR1.3

Beep PR1.3
New icon for Beep-profile
Nokia hasn't published yet an official change-log for PR1.3 but announced that it contains over 1000 quality improvements. Furthermore many native applications like Facebook, Twitter, Nokia Maps & Drive as well as the application & music store were improved. Overall the update makes the phone very smooth. What stands out are the faster GPS lock and bug fixes in Wi-Fi and mobile network connectivity. Visually PR1.3 doesn't change a lot except for an additional icon when using beep profile.

The MeeGo Harmattan developer team tried hard to make this phone even better and iron out many little bugs. But if you look for new features like Skype video calls, it's a search in vain.

However, Nokia mentioned a while ago that only the 3rd party developer itself (Skype) can add this feature.

With PR1.3 we experienced some minor bugs with 3rd party software: Active application icons like PureLight or 2G/3G toggle don't work properly anymore - although only visually. Installation of Wazapp somehow added two application icons on my Nokia N9. The famous youtube application CuteTube doesn't play videos anymore - the developer got informed by Nokia and we will hopefully see an update soon.
