Nokia N9 at Los Angeles Auto Show 2012

MirrorLink
The Los Angeles Auto Show 2012 is held from November 30 through December 9. One of the many guests is the Nokia N9 which presents the MirrorLink technology.

Brian Cooley, editor for CNET TV, shows the seamless integration between N9 and car infotainment system in a 3 minute video.

What is MirrorLink?

MirrorLink technology allows to connect a smartphone to a car's infotainment system. It's often called the smarter & saver way of driving since MirrorLink can connect all the important smartphone functions without distracting the driver with unnecessary functions and applications. Advantages are a straight access to phone contacts, usage of updated navigation software like Nokia drive and listen to your music library: Picture and sound are automatically "mirrored" over the car's inbuilt screen and speaker system.

How can I use MirrorLink?

Until 2013/14 you unfortunately won't find MirrorLink build in by default in present cars (except for Toyota IQ model). But with all major car manufacturer being member of CCC (Car Connectivity Consortium) we might soon hear more about this techonolgy.

It is also possible to add a MirrorLink device (provided among others by Sony) to existing cars for a price of about $500-$600.

Nokia has been ahead when it comes to MirrorLink compatible smartphones. Most Symbian and MeeGo devices are ready to be used with MirrorLink.

A software called Nokia Car Mode for N9 can be downloaded at Nokia Store. At the moment the price isn't very attractive and the application might not be available to every country.

Have a look at the video showing a Nokia N9 connected to a MirrorLink device presented Brian Cooley at the Los Angeles Auto Show. As you will hear, the author confuses the Nokia N9 with a Lumia device - which ironically doesn't support MirrorLink with it's pre-installed Windows Phone software.
