The devices Jolla displays at MWC 2014 already run the latest update - Sailfish OS 1.0.4.1 Ohijärvi. The upgrade brings further system improvements, some new UI elements and functionalities. With this update, Sailfish OS officially takes off the "beta" tag.

Improved user interface
Jolla gave a nice finishing to the user interface. A side-to-side comparison makes 1.0.4.1 Ohijärvi feel faster and more colorful. The ambiance wallpaper doesn't shade into a plain colour as fast as it did on 1.0.3.8 (when scrolling down to multitasking-view). Running applications are now in a better contrast to the background and seem to have a stronger "blurred" effect (see picture below). The minimized version of the camera app has now an icon and applications which are about to be closed got a different (and by far better visible) closing cross.
Various UI improvements |
The pulley menu also got a design-lifting and appears to be thicker - again a nice improvement to give the UI a better contrast and highlight what is important to the action the user is about to do. To this category we can also count an appearing lock-icon whenever you swipe down to enter stand-by mode.
Finally the screen on Jolla glows a little bit up if you try to access a non-existing pulley menu (for example in open messaging application).
New pulley menu and fixed app icon rendering (no more deformed pixels on top of round icons) |
New virtual keyboard
Bigger lettres and an abandonment of ambience-coloring improve the usability of the Sailfish keyboard. I didn't discover any new keyboard languages, but a region setting which has been missing: Measuring units and language can now be set separately. This resolves the issue of having British imperial units in maps when using English system language. Generally there are more settings available for apps provided by Jolla than previously (via Settings/Apps).

Improved camera, internet sharing and bluetooth sync
Jolla's camera has now options like "Light sensibility", "Timer" and different camera grids. In settings we find a new internet sharing option (tethering) and Bluetooth sync which let's you add devices via pulley menu (Jolla didn't reveal yet how exactly Bluetooth sync will be used).

Those are the obvious improvement in Sailfish OS 1.0.4.1 Ohijärvi - certainly a lot that has been done can't be seen right away. But the system feels even faster, smoother and more stable than before. Upgrade will be available in 2nd week of March.
