Jolla updates Sailfish OS to 1.0.3.8 "Naamankajärvi"

Naamankajärvi or version 1.0.3.8 is the name of the latest Sailfish upgrade.
Named after a lake close to Oulu in northern Finland, the January upgrade brings some fresh water to Jolla phones. Next to performance improvements and bug fixes, the release adds new features like landscape mode in browser, zoom in camera and distinction between Sailfish/Android apps in Jolla store.
Jolla did a great job on that update, but the wait for the next one has already started since not everything was fixed with Naamankajärvi.
We have a look at what changed and what remains the same.

Upgrade release notes and what changed

Jolla worked on many issues which have been discussed on together.jolla.com and you can read about all the improvements here: Release Notes 1.0.3.8 "Naamankajärvi"

After updating the device, Sailfish feels quiet a bit faster (scrolling, opening applications, etc) and some annoying bugs like high battery consumption (due to The Other Half NFC bug) are gone. Zooming in camera application and landscape browsing are very appreciated and several improvements in People app will take away troubles you might have had with your contacts management.

Jolla promised an update in January and delivered in January - something which isn't self-evident as many big companies often can't keep their promised release dates. But next to all the compliments, there are also some negative parts about the update.

What hasn't changed yet

Some important requested features are still not implemented: No MMS, no LTE, no SIP, no Card/Cal-DAV. Furthermore some annoying bugs are still there. WiFi connections keep being a hassle with random disconnections or whenever GPS is enabled at the same time. In maps I still observe the problem that the application tells me location services wouldn't be enables, even though they are.

Talking about connections: Despite several bug fixes in mail app, I still can't send emails from a certain SMTP server which workes fine on any other mail client I use. It's to hope that Jolla adds such features and fixes those bugs as soon as possible to be able to get rid of the "beta" sticker which still covers that phone when compared to major mobile platforms on the market.

Steps backwards since the upgrade

Several Jolla users had problems to upgrade their phone yesterday, so you might need some patience and several tries. A reason could be that Jolla's servers couldn't handle all the upgrade requests yesterday evening.

In case you haven't updated yet, you should make a backup of your settings and personal data saved in 3rd party Jolla applications. The update seems to move the previous user files into a different folder - probably a bug of the update process. More about that and solutions here on together.jolla.com. Let's hope Jolla takes a closer look at that problem since personal files are now stored somewhere on the phone and can't be deleted by many users (you need root access via terminal or SSH remote connection).

Since the update I also miss notifications on the lock screen. 3rd party applications (incl. Android ones) don't seem to leave notifications anymore. Therefore it can happen for example that you miss a WhatsApp message in case you don't check the notification screen (swipe up). It's unclear if Jolla erased that feature or if it is a bug. It's certainly not a great solution at the moment.

A last problem after upgrading are messed up icons and a permanent landscape mode which make the phone unusable. A reason for this problem hasn't been found yet and it only affects a few Jolla owners. This problem is probably caused by a 3rd party application - if you encounter that issue have a look here: together.jolla.com

Enjoy your upgraded Jolla and thanks to Jolla for the regular updates and open ear to community requests!
